The Global Health Body Raises Concern Over Acute Lack of Obesity Medications

Fewer than 10% of individuals eligible to benefit from weight-loss injections like Wegovy are able to get them, caution the World Health Organization as it publishes its initial advice on the medications.

With over a billion people worldwide currently classified as obese, it is urging increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

According to estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidance recognises that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be treated with holistic and continuous care," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to broad access to the treatments that can help people shift considerable weight, says the organization.

Skinny Jab Scarcity

Despite the present most optimistic case, the production of these medications would only suffice for around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The advice urges governments and firms to widen availability, through approaches such as patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Function

These medications imitate a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and enhance the sense of being full so users reduce food intake.

Patients typically begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of starting on the weekly injections.

Evidence points to patients may see weight return after a year of discontinuing the medication, because their usual appetite come back.

To be overweight or obese elevates your likelihood for contracting diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Excess weight impacts individuals in every country and was associated with 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
